CAMPING in the John Day Basin:
Coming to see us? There are some great places to pitch your tent or park your trailer in and around Wheeler County. This list is fairly complete. However, check locally for additional and new camping and trailer sites.
Camping choices in the area include a number of U. S. Forest Service Campgrounds and camping areas. These are generally more than 10 miles from towns, and most have minimal amenities. The largest and most developed USFS campground is Ochoco Divide, on US Highway 26, 17 miles west of Mitchell. The major Oregon State Park providing camping in the area is Clyde Holliday State Park, 8 miles wet of John Day, and approximately 35 miles east of the John Day Fossil beds Thomas Condon Paleontology Center.
Wheeler county offers camping at two parks between Fossil and Spray. Both offer water at campsites, and clean pit toilets, but have no trailer facilities or power. Fees are $5.00 per night.
Several commercial or municipal campgrounds, including Lazy Wolf Resort in Spray, and Fairgrounds Campground in Fossil offer trailer facilities and hookups.
